About Sophie la Girafe
The very popular Sophie la Girafe is regarded as one of the most successful and safe toys for infants in various parts of the world. It has been used delightedly by thousands of infants, in more than 60 countries for over 50 years now! It has even achieved the national icon status in France, as the number of Sophies sold is higher than babies born.
This little Giraffe was born on in 1961 on May 26th, on the feast day of Saint Madeline Sophie Barat, which is where she gets her name. In days where only farm animals toys were available, a certain Monsieur Rampeau, an expert in transforming the sap from the Hevea tree into rubber for toy making came up with the idea of designing a giraffe. The exotic wildlife figure was a first of its kind in the market, and Vulli has continued to keep the highly guarded secret of how this toy is made. The process, which involves over 14 manual operations, has remained the same to this day. The little giraffe’s fame spread fast and soon, initially only by simple word of mouth. From then on generations of children in Europe and beyond have been enjoying the squeaky Sophie!
When a little one enters this unfamiliar world, each new experience is foreign and vital. The baby needs to find a sense of comfort, and her toys become one of the most significant aids for the same. Understanding the influence of these, Vulli has, for over 50 years now, designed and created products that are helpful in various stages of development of a baby.
Established way back in 1945 by Mr. Joseph Vullierme, the company moved from specializing in mechanical toys to creating the acclaimed and admired Sophie la Girafe in 1961. Since 1991, the company has been based in Rumilly in the French Alps of Haute-Savoie region, and the Sophie la Girafe, along with other products, are still manufactured in workshops there.
